Worker killed in North Carolina highway accident

On Behalf of | Sep 25, 2014 | Workers' Compensation |

A North Carolina man was killed in a Sept. 19 accident in Morganton, authorities reported. The man died at the scene of a one-vehicle accident involving a Ford F-150 pickup truck. The event reportedly transpired at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Interstate 40, where a crew of construction workers were paving the highway.

Authorities said that the 37-year-old driver of the Ford struck three workers. As a result of the incident, a 43-year-old man died. The two other workers suffered injuries, reportedly. Emergency personnel transported both injured workers to a hospital, where officials deemed one worker’s injuries to be serious and released the other worker after treatment.

Law enforcement officials do not suspect that the driver was impaired or speeding at the time of the accident, authorities reported. Authorities also reported that no criminal charges were filed in the immediate aftermath of the accident. According to officials, the accident is still under investigation.

Further investigation into this case might, hypothetically, yield evidence that indicates reckless or negligent driving contributed to the deadly accident. If that were to happen, the two individuals who suffered injuries may wish to retain the counsel and resources of a personal injury attorney.

For, people who suffer injuries while working may be entitled to receive financial compensation through not only workers’ compensation benefits but also a personal injury lawsuit. In order to prevail in the latter, the lawyer representing the injured victims must convince a civil court that the party whose actionable behavior contributed to the accident should be held responsible for the event and its consequent damages. These damages may include hospital bills, medical costs and expenses related to long-term rehabilitation.
