Swimming accidents could lead to spinal injuries

On Behalf of | Jul 18, 2014 | Spinal Cord Injuries |

There are many activities that residents of the state of North Carolina save for the summer season. Swimming outside is one of those things. While some people prefer to relax in the water while using a flotation device, others prefer to be more active and at any opportunity will dive, head first, into the water. Unfortunately, this activity could be dangerous and result in serious injuries.

Diving into a body of water that someone is unfamiliar with could leave someone paralyzed due to spinal injuries, or in the worst cases, even dead. To help reduce the number of these incidents that occur, the Prevention of Spinal Cord Injury Foundation recommends that everyone follows its motto: “Feet first! First time!”

The idea behind this is that if there is an unseen object beneath the water or it is more shallow than the person realized, their head and neck will not absorb the force of the impact. While the avoidance of all injuries is of course preferable, it is fair to say that most would prefer to have to deal with a broken leg as opposed to not being able to feel their legs for the rest of their life.

Of course swimming accidents are not the only situations that could result in an injury to the spine. A variety of activities, including falls and car accidents could lead to this type of catastrophic injury. Regardless of how a spinal injury is incurred, medical treatment can be exorbitant.

When a spinal injury is due to the negligence of another person, it is possible that the party responsible for the incident could face a personal injury lawsuit. When successful, the money recovered in such a lawsuit could go a long way toward covering those bills and other expenses that could accrue.
