Motorcycle crash statistics in North Carolina

On Behalf of | Oct 9, 2014 | Motorcycle Accidents |

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, there were 4,269 crashes that involved motorcyclists in 2012. Among them, 161 resulted in fatalities and 3,472, in injuries.

Compared to 2011 statistics, the mortality rate of motorcycle accidents jumped 14.3 percent in 2012, when 160 motorcyclists died as a result of crashes. However, the 3,666 motorcyclists who suffered injuries in 2012 crashes marks a 7.6 percent decline when compared to 2011 figures. In 841 of the crashes that involved a motorcycle, moped or scooter, 3.1 percent of the riders died and 90.1 percent suffered injuries, statistics from 2012 show. From 2008 to 2012, there was an average of 4,006 motorcycle collisions per year, with 150 of them being fatal crashes.

Regarding specific months, the DMV reports that the highest number of 2012 motorcycle accidents occurred in June, with 527 in total. May and September had the second and third highest numbers of reported crashes, respectively. These same three months also saw the highest numbers of fatalities and injuries due to motorcycle accidents. June had 28 deaths and 499 injuries; May, 18 deaths and 468 injuries; and September, 23 deaths and 451 injuries. The months with the lowest reported crashes, fatalities and injuries were January, February and December.

As these numbers demonstrate, the ramifications of a motorcycle accident can be serious, grave and even life-altering. Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to injury or even death during traffic accidents. In the event that an accident can be demonstrably attributed to a reckless or negligent driver, then there may be grounds for a civil lawsuit.

For instance, motorcyclists who suffer injuries in accidents caused by another party’s negligent driving may retain a personal injury lawyer and file suit. In this way, victims may seek compensation for the economic damages they suffered in connection with the crash, such as hospital bills, vehicular repairs and even lost income.
