1 killed in North Carolina accident, alcohol use suspected

One person was killed after an accident involving a moped on Dec. 19 in north Charlotte, and a 46-year-old faces charges for the accident that include driving while impaired and felony death by vehicle. According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the crash took place around 11:30 p.m. on Old Statesville Road.

The 46-year-old man driving a 2011 Infiniti reportedly rear-ended a moped, and the moped became stuck to the front of his vehicle from the collision. The police say that the man drove about a mile further along the road after the accident before he exited his vehicle and ran, and authorities found the man by using a K-9 unit and helicopters. This driver was taken to Carolinas Medical Center after the police located him, and he suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was later transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail. The man also faces charges for two counts of hit-and-run, felony serious injury by vehicle and not having an operator's license.

The 19-year-old driver of the moped and his 22-year-old female passenger were both thrown from the moped, and the passenger died at the crash site. The driver suffered serious injuries, and one of his coworkers said he needed surgery after the crash. The couple had reportedly recently left their work near the Northlake Mall when the accident happened.

While a crash like this one is tragic, the family of a victim who dies in a motor vehicle accident caused by negligence could receive some closure and financial support when filing a wrongful death claim in civil court. This could provide a decedent's loved ones with compensation for funeral expenses and even for emotional losses. One must show that a driver's negligence caused one's death in a civil suit, and using drugs or alcohol while driving can constitute negligence.
